Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture is an effective therapy based on thousands of years observation of cause and effect and is backed up by scientific research.  It is routinely administered in Chinese hospitals alongside western medicine and is now commonplace in the western world either as an alternative or to complement existing medical treatments.  These days people will often be referred for acupuncture by medical professionals when conventional treatments are not working and those people often say they wish they had tried it first!

Acupuncture is suitable for a range of conditions.  Some of the most commonly treated are headaches and migraine, arthritis, back pain, digestive problems, sports injuries, infertility, menopausal and menstrual issues, anxiety, stress-related problems and many more.  It is not necessary to have a diagnosis to receive acupuncture.  This is because TCM works on the basis of typical underlying patterns that produce symptoms and aims to restore equilibrium in the body to relieve those symptoms and bring the body & mind back to optimum health.  Most people who receive acupuncture additionally tend to report improvements in their sleep, general wellbeing and ability to relax.

There are various theories on how acupuncture works such as increased blood flow, change in brain activity due to the effect on the central and peripheral nervous systems and other chemical and hormonal messengers, such as the release of endorphins – natural painkillers.   The most thoroughly researched aspects are the powerful pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects.  Acupuncture also has benefits in mood disorders such as anxiety and depression by modifying serotonin and cortisol, and by switching the body from the ‘fight or flight’ activated state to the relaxed ‘rest and digest’ mode.
