Astrology is the study of the stars; a geocentric, northern hemisphere art evolving from ~400 BC founded upon patterns and perceptions. Initial observations of the sun’s passage helped man to farm and to work hand in hand with nature. The art expanded into the concept of an individual’s birth chart, which maps the entire solar system at the exact moment, day and year of birth relating the eight known planets, sun and moon to the horizon and meridian of the earth.

Today we have the evolution of Psychological Astrology, a transpersonal based therapy working with myths, symbolism, archetypes, astrology, psychology and the client’s birth chart. Carl Jung (1875-1961, Psychiatrist & Psychoanalyst) described archetypes as patterns of psychic perception and understanding common to humanity forming the collective unconscious. Planets in our solar system are treated as archetypes and Greek mythology revered planets as gods who held specific roles, traits and characteristics within the Greek pantheon.

Transpersonal is a term used to describe experiences and worldviews that more exists beyond one’s physical identity. It is an appreciation for the interconnectedness of humankind, nature, psyche and cosmos. Having developed a sound ego structure, one can attune to the collective unconscious and embrace archetypes, which affords a deeper personal resonance and understanding of human existence.

“We are born at a given moment, in a given place and, like vintage years of wine, we have the qualities of the year and of the season of which we are born. Astrology does not lay claim to anything more”. Carl Jung

Liz Hills offers Astrology. What can you expect in a session? The client’s birth chart is consulted within a traditional counselling setting with a qualified counsellor. It’s as if 3 people are in the session: counsellor, client and birth chart. I listen to the client, their story and their struggles whilst assimilating the information held in the birth chart. The birth chart maps archetypes at the personal level and acts as a guide only throughout sessions. The birth chart helps clients to understand and to own one’s personality and projections (i.e. what we may be doing / contributing unconsciously to situations) in conjunction with traditional counselling, which allows one’s story to unfold providing the history and context to the birth chart. A rough outline for therapy would be a course of 6 sessions: 3 sessions exploring natal aspects (i.e. ingrained behaviours) progressing onto exploring what’s happening in the here and now with 3 sessions focusing on transits and progressions. Objectives of therapy are to: help clients grow their self-awareness; understand their personality and make up; facilitate a transpersonal inquiry (bigger picture stuff!).

  • Liz Hills Liz-Hill-astrology-the-harmony-centre-halesworth-suffolk-fiI was training to be a counsellor at the time when I started an experiential course on how to interpret the birth chart. The course taught astrology through dance, music, meditation, lectures and drama. What I learnt in counselling I would then cross-reference in my chart to see if astrology could offer any insight. ...read more
